Yes, your slide can be out when you're replacing the motor.
To test your current motor you'll just need to swap the polarity to see if it runs. If it doesn't run then you need the Replacement Motor # LC125802 (make sure that 18:1 gear ratio is correct though if your slide uses 2 motors), but if it does run then that means you have bad wiring somewhere that needs to be fixed.

If you're testing the wiring and there's power getting to the lift motor when the switch is in the off position then you either have a wiring issue or the vent is getting power from somewhere else. Typically if an RV vent fan is having issues it's going to be caused by your power and ground or a faulty circuit board. With yours running full blast randomly and the buttons not working the power most likely isn't the issue but it wouldn't hurt to check the voltage running to the power wire with a multimeter # PT89ZR to see if you're at 12 volts or if you're getting less or more, causing an issue for the circuit board. You should also verify that you have a good ground connection....

- Hey Bill thanks for your question. Like you said there are several things that can cause an intermittent trailer disconnected message. The most common cause is a rusty or corroded trailer connector. Go ahead and inspect the trailers 7-way plug. If there is noticeable rust or corrosion it will need to be replaced with something like the 7-Way Round RV Style Trailer Connector # A7WCB. I suggest using a bit of Dielectric Grease # 11755 on the trailer plug and the vehicles 7-way.
